In 2021, waning, surging, and mutating of the virus became standard, even as the vaccine rolled out. I use the earth’s journey around the sun to express the ups and downs, hopes and disappointment, stagnation and endless spinning. Variation in the position of the sun, the intensity of the colors, and the angles of the branches reveal a trajectory of continuous recalibration. There was no expectation of a return to “normal” even as we finished the year with a sense of equanimity.
